Getting the Word Out About the Unlikely 1 at the Slimey Crud Run Motorcycle Rally by Gary Ilminen

The Slimey Crud Motorcycle Gang Café Racer Run is one of the largest motorcycle events in the upper Midwest; it happens twice a year and tends to draw between 2,000 and 4,000 motorcycles. Run on the first Sunday in May and the first Sunday in October each year, it starts in Pine Bluff, WI and goes by any route the rider may choose to Leland, WI.

To take advantage of the opportunity to reach out to the huge potential audience for my book, I made two plaques to set up on the bike itself on display at the rally.

One is an image of my AMA #1 National Championship plate, the other (detailed images attached) tells about the book. I also made up business card style book info handouts with the TouchPoint Press website address and information about Amazon and B&N as other sources to order the book from and left them set up on the bike’s seat so people could just take them.

Quite a few of them were taken at each end of the rally ride route, so I feel pretty good. I estimate I talked to ten or eleven individuals at length about the bike, the record, and the book and all of them got the card. A friend of mine who was at the rally watched for quite a while from a distance said there was a pretty steady crowd around the bike when I was off circulating among the other riders—lots of pictures were apparently being taken of the bike and the plaques.

It was low-budget marketing, to be sure, but it was fun and seemed to connect with a lot of rider/readers. The results may show up in the next few weeks. We’ll see. In any case, it was a lot of fun!
