Kathryn Ramsperger
Kathryn Brown Ramsperger graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Hollins University, earning a B.A. in English, with an emphasis in creative writing. She has a graduate degree in Publications Management from George Washington University.
Kathryn worked as a journalist in Virginia and Washington, DC. Her first article was published by the Roanoke Times & World-News, and she continued to write for that newspaper until she moved to Washington, DC, where she became a researcher for the National Geographic Society and wrote for their children’s magazine WORLD, now National Geographic Kids, and the Society’s special publications. Her articles also appeared in Kiplinger’s Changing Times, now Kiplinger magazine, the Gazette newspapers, and Aspen health publications. She’s written and edited for nonprofits ranging from The National Institutes of Health to The National Association of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors to The Washington Ballet.
As Head of Publications for the International Red Cross and Red Crescent in Geneva, Switzerland, Kathryn lived and worked in Europe and Africa, travelling throughout the Middle East. Previously, her cause-related marketing for The American Red Cross gave a voice to the homeless, people living with HIV, neighborhoods reeling after a disaster, blood and bone marrow recipients, and refugees fleeing war and famine.
In 2000, she formed her own communications company, Ramsperger Communications in suburban Maryland, focusing on global relief and development, multicultural communication, women’s and children’s issues, and peace building. She’s also a coach for Creatives and parents of creative children and children with learning differences.
Her article, “Why So-So Grades Are OK (If Your Kid Has These 6 Traits Instead)” was the number one socially shared Expert article on yourtango.com in 2015. Her online articles have also appeared on Yahoo Parenting and The Good Men Project. Her most recent short story “A Rug, A Piano, A Quilt, A Voice,” appeared in Forge literary journal. The Penmen Review featured an excerpt from her novel The Shores of Our Souls in 2015. The Shores of Our Souls received semifinalist recognition in the 2016 Faulkner-Wisdom international literary competition.
A lifelong writer, Kathryn’s first short story won a high school contest at Roanoke College. Her writing for humanitarian publications received two Hermes Creative Awards and multiple awards from the International Association of Business Communicators. Her first novel Moments On the Edge won the Hollins University Fiction Award. All Kathryn’s work focuses on peace and the connections people share.
Kathryn lives in the DC suburbs with her husband, two teens, and two cats. When she’s not writing, reading, and coaching, she’s singing.
